The evolution of Ducati never stops: the new Panigale V4

With the 2022 version, the Panigale V4 project has taken the most important evolutionary step since its debut, becoming faster on the track, and more intuitive and less tiring for a wide range of sports riders

The Panigale series is the biggest manifestation of the continuous exchange of information and technology from the racing world to mass-produced bicycles, and with the launch of the latest version, it continues to evolve year after year, just like the Ducati Corse prototype

The new 2022 Panigale V4 has been improved in all areas, including aerodynamics, ergonomics, engines, chassis and electronics

Borgo Panigale (Bologna, Italy), November 25, 2021-In the fifth episode of Ducati’s 2022 world premiere, the Borgo Panigale-based motorcycle manufacturer presents to fans and motorcycle enthusiasts around the world The new 2022 Panigale V4 was introduced.

The 2022 Panigale V4 represents the next step in the characteristic road of Borgo Panigale sports bikes, drawing life from the long-term experience of Ducati Corse, using continuous knowledge and technology sharing from the racing world, and directly applying it to the production of bicycles. This new project expresses the uniqueness of a brand that can win the MotoGP Team Championship for the second time in a row, while ensuring that every element designed for the race can be transferred to a motorcycle built for enthusiasts. Panigale V4 is constantly updated and improved, just like in MotoGP and WorldSBK.

With the 2022 version, the Panigale V4 project has completed the most important evolution since its birth. Improvements involve all areas: aerodynamics, ergonomics, engines, chassis and electronic equipment. The result is faster bikes on the track, while at the same time providing a more intuitive and relaxed bike for a wide range of riders. In short, it provides exciting rewards for professionals and amateurs.

These exclusive features have been confirmed by special tests on the Vallelunga circuit in Italy. Both the 2021 Panigale V4 S and 2022 versions are equipped with Pirelli SC1 tires and are driven by two testers. Professional driver Michele Pirro (the official Ducati tester) also participated in the race. At the end of the day, it turned out that the best lap time of the first tester on the new 2022 Panigale V4 S increased by 0.9 seconds, the second by 1.2 seconds, and Michele Pirro's speed increased by half a second and only ran Three seconds from his best time in last year's Italian Superbike Championship in Vallelunga's first race, he raced on the high-performance SCX compound.

The first new feature of the new 2022 Panigale V4 is related to aerodynamics. Ducati engineers focused their hard work on the fairing, which now integrates a more compact and thinner dual-profile design wing, which improves efficiency: this update guarantees the same vertical load at 186 mph Up to 81 lbs (37 kg at 300 km/h). In addition, the lower part of the fairing has a redesigned exhaust socket to improve the cooling system, thereby increasing the performance of the engine, especially on track days.

Ergonomics has also been the core focus of in-depth development. The purpose is to improve the control of the bike on the track, so that the rider can make full use of the Panigale V4's performance tracking during laps and heavy use.

The seat has a flatter shape and different coatings to further support the rider during braking and make the body easier to move. Compared with the 2021 version, the rear of the fuel tank has a new shape, allowing the rider to be better anchored when braking, allowing the rider to drive faster and farther. Thanks to these new ergonomic designs, the rider is also fully integrated into the bicycle, so it is generally more comfortable to ride; even when completely leaning outside the curve, the contact area of the arm has been enhanced.

The core of the bike is represented by the 1,103 cc Desmosedici Stradale MotoGP derivative engine, which has undergone a series of updates. Due to the introduction of dedicated technical elements, Desmosedici Stradale has completed further development in 2022. These technical elements can provide excellent performance on the track and respond immediately to throttle requests.

The new SBK gearbox has been updated to lengthened 1, 2 and 6 gears, and is faster on the track through a new torque management strategy, ensuring that the rider always has the possibility of the best thrust when opening the throttle. Thanks to these interventions and the new dedicated mapping, Desmosedici Stradale can provide 210 horsepower at 12,500 rpm. The engine also provides 90.6 lb-ft of torque at 11,000 rpm.

A notable detail of the new 2022 engine evolution is the use of a new gearbox that can extend the transmission ratios of first, second and sixth gears. This new SBK transmission ratio is more "racing" and more suitable for use on the track. The first gear has been lengthened by 11.6%, while the second gear has been lengthened by 5.6%. Thanks to this new gearbox, it is now easier to handle the tightest turns in first gear, enjoying better engine braking and better acceleration when exiting corners. The smaller speed jump between the first two ratios allows the newly calibrated DQS to work more efficiently and provide better performance. Finally, the sixth gear has been lengthened by 1.8%, allowing a higher top speed than the 2021 Panigale V4.

A new power mode logic is implemented on the 2022 Panigale V4, which provides four engine configurations: full, high, medium and low. The Full and Low configurations are newly designed, and the High and Medium configurations use a new strategy. The full power mode is the most sporty mode in Panigale V4's history. Except for the first gear, the full potential of the engine can be achieved through the torque curve without the need for an electronic filter. A new wiring diagram management system has been developed for high power and medium power modes; it is now dedicated to each of the six gears, which guarantees the possibility that the rider will always have the best thrust when opening the throttle. The low-power mode is designed to make road riding more enjoyable, limiting the maximum power of the bicycle to 150 horsepower, and providing a particularly easy-to-manage throttle response.

Thanks to the racing exhaust system included in the Ducati Performance Catalog, the performance of the Desmosedici Stradale can be further improved. In order to give everyone the opportunity to use a complete racing exhaust system on tracks with stricter noise limits, the new DP3 exhaust system is available, made entirely of titanium, developed in cooperation with Akrapovič, and the noise is limited to 105 dB (102 dB , DB suppressor is installed). The new exhaust is equipped with a high muffler at the rear to ensure a power increase of 18 horsepower, bringing the maximum to 228 horsepower, while the maximum torque value is increased to 96.6 lb-ft (131 Nm), and the overall weight is reduced by 11 pounds. (5 kg). This new exhaust is added to the more compact full racing version already in the catalog. This version extends below the engine and is also made entirely of Akrapovič titanium. At the same level of performance, the weight is reduced by 13.2 lb. (6 kg), the noise level is 109 decibels, which can be reduced to 107 decibels after installing a decibel suppressor.

Desmosedici Stradale is also a structural element of the chassis, directly connected to the aluminum front frame. The chassis consists of a lightweight front frame made of magnesium and a seatpost made of cast aluminum.

The new Panigale V4 S is equipped with the new Öhlins NPX 25/30 electronically controlled pressurized front fork. To the lowest. The result is improved braking support and better absorption of bumps, which gives the rider a better riding feel.

Compared with the 2021 Panigale V4, the new front fork has a travel of 5 inches (125 mm) and 0.2 inches (5 mm), and it can adopt a softer setting (spring stiffness from 10 to 9.5 N/mm), which improves even It can also maintain a smooth response on the rugged apron, as well as grip under critical conditions, and it can also provide a better feeling in the most demanding braking parts.

The new front fork is combined with the Öhlins TTX36 rear shock absorber and Öhlins steering damper, both of which have an event-based control system. The system provides the rider with the opportunity to customize the suspension intervention according to different riding conditions (braking, turning, acceleration) and changing the operating parameters of the hardware components. For the rider, this means a higher level of control over the bike’s dynamics, which is conducive to road safety and lap time on the track.

The pivot position of the single-sided aluminum rocker arm is 0.2 inches (4 mm) higher than the 2021 version. This increases the anti-back squat effect, that is, reduces the lowering of the rear part and stabilizes the acceleration of the bicycle.

Panigale V4 S is equipped with 3-spoke forged aluminum alloy wheels and Pirelli Diablo™ Supercorsa SP tires (120/70 ZR17 for front wheels and 200/60 ZR 17 for rear wheels). The brake system is equipped with Brembo Stylema® integrated calipers at the front, with four 1.2-inch (30 mm) diameter pistons, each working on a 13-inch (330 mm) diameter brake disc, ensuring excellent braking Dynamic power, and at the rear, a 10-inch (245 mm) brake disc with 2-piston calipers.

Even the standard Panigale V4 is equipped with the most advanced chassis, including: 43 mm fully adjustable Showa large piston fork (BPF), Sachs steering damper, Sachs monoshock (also fully adjustable) and with 5-spoke design.

The 2022 Panigale V4 is equipped with the latest generation of electronic packaging based on the use of a 6-axis inertial platform, which can instantly detect the roll, yaw and pitch angle of the motorcycle in space. The electronic kit includes controls for managing all riding stages, and its operating parameters are connected to the four available riding modes (level A, level B, sports, street) by default.

These parameters can be viewed more effectively thanks to an improved dashboard, which has a new distribution of external light functions. In addition, Ducati technicians also introduced an additional information mode, developed based on the recommendations of MotoGP drivers, called "Track Evo", which is an option added to existing road and track settings.

In the "Track Evo" screen, the tachometer moves on the horizontal scale located in the highest part of the meter, which is the most obvious, and the indication of gear meshing is located in the center of the screen. There are four sectors of different colors in the right area, and each sector is dedicated to electronic control (DTC, DWC, DSC, EBC). When the electronic device processes a parameter, these sectors will light up individually and stay on for the time required for the rider to recognize which indicator is activated. This signaling mode helps the user understand the control tasks that actually work, allowing him to more accurately and punctually intervene in the selection of the best level and obtain better performance faster. The sector on the left uses a stopwatch to complete the information, the number of laps completed and the speed.

In order to make the shift indication clearer, a green LED is introduced on the left side of the instrument panel. This solution is more obvious and precise in the feedback.

Even the appearance of the bicycle has been modified to be more aggressive. The unprecedented graphic design conceived by Ducati Centro Stile includes the black applied to the logo on the all-red fairing, the double fabric saddle (there are two tones on the S version), and also for the S version, the red label rim on the black .

Panigale V4 and Panigale V4 S will be available in North America starting in February 2022, using the classic Ducati red. Panigale V4 starts at US$23,295 in the United States, and Panigale V4 S starts at US$29,995. The Canadian price of the Panigale V4 starts at CAD 26,495, and the price of the Panigale V4 S starts at CAD 33,895.

Panigale V4 can be equipped with accessories included in the Ducati Performance catalog. It includes certified components and pure racing elements designed for track drivers. Ducati Performance accessories can be viewed through the online configurator on Ducati.com.
